Actual Radios roving reporter Simon Baldock has been out and about in Colchester visiting Mike Polom at the Colchester Bike Kitchen. Simon has always been a keen cyclist and once even took part in a charity bike ride in China covering 500 kilometers in just five days.
Simon discovers the Bike Kitchen is a friendly pop-up community bike workshop located in central Colchester with all the tools and assistance you need to get you back on two wheels.
Mike explains everything involved with carrying out the ‘M check’ which you should do before you ride your bike and explains more about the type of maintenance you can carry out yourself and where you should look for more expert assistance.
Mike also tells us about Re-cycle, Re-cycle are an orgainistion who have been running for a number of years, they are based in Wormingford (just outside Colchester). Re-cycle collect unused and unwanted bicycles in this country, repair them and send them to Africa (along with spare parts) they then deliver them to communities who require them. Mike explains how the people of these communities are encouraged to cycle to school or to get to work, or even use the transport to set up a new business.
For assistance with your bike you can find Mike and the volunteers at 15 Queen Street, Colchester. For more information on opening times and their services offered as well as future events pop over to their website here.
Simon’s full report will be broadcast on Actual Radio Wednesday 21st June 2017 at 9:35 or if you miss it you can hear it here.
