Essex Mums Vote Colchester Castle as ‘Best Museum’ in 2017 Awards

Colchester Castle has received the ‘Best Museum’ award in the well-recognised Essex Mums online awards this year. Overcoming tough competition from around the county, the win highlighted the Castle’s range of educational and interactive displays for all ages, plus star exhibits such as the Colchester Vase and Fenwick Treasure.

Councillor Tim Young, Portfolio Holder for Business and Culture and Deputy Leader of Colchester Borough Council said: “The Essex Mums ‘Best Museum’ award is a fantastic accolade for the Castle, proving the family-friendly appeal of this veritable treasure trove of Colchester’s history. I hope this will encourage more families to take a trip back in time and visit Colchester Castle, plus the other fascinating heritage sites in our town.”

Louise Ford, founder of Essex Mums said: “The awards have been running for a few years now and have been a great way of supporting the amazing jobs so many people do. Essex is a vibrant county with a massive range of activities for children of all ages, as well as some thriving independent small businesses. It has been an honour to give them all a little extra recognition, help them spread the word that bit further and provide parents with a list of new things to try!”

Families visiting the museum can build a Norman archway, use digital technology to explore the 2,000 years old Doctor’s Grave or experience the thrills and spills of chariot racing in the Roman Circus. You can also watch and learn on a grand scale as a large scale ‘son et lumière’ animated projection transforms almost an entire wall of the Castle with light and sound.

For visitors looking for something extra this season, the recently refurbished Castle Prison exhibit offers a fascinating insight into the Colchester witch hunts. Expert-led tours down into the Roman vaults and up onto the panoramic Castle roof can also be booked, adding to the appeal for thrill seekers and sightseers alike.
